Power in the Name – To Protect.

“The name of Yahweh the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.” (Proverbs 18:10).

By the time of the Book of Acts in the history of the early church, the Christian believers were using the name Jesus as synonymous with Yahweh. So when they saw the holy name of Yahweh in the Hebrew Bible, they through faith also applied that name to Jesus. Yahweh = Yeshua = Jesus. So the early church would have had no problem saying that, according to the verse above, the name of Jesus is a strong tower. No doubt the number of times Jesus said “I AM” in His ministry freed them to do this after He had ascended to heaven. Whenever Jesus said, “I AM,” He was equating Himself with Yahweh, the Great I AM WHO I AM. Jesus declared that He was on equal footing with the great Yahweh of the Hebrew Bible, so His followers soon took that up and used it in their Christian life and witness.

“For where two or three come together in my name, there I am with them.”  (Matthew 18:20).

“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God in whom I trust. He will cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you will find refuge; His faithfulness will be your shield and fortress.” (Ps. 91:1,2,4).

“For you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the foe. I long to dwell in your tent forever and take refuge in the shelter of your wings.”  (Ps. 61:3-4).

“I love you, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer; my God is my rock in whom I take refuge. He is my shield and the strength of my salvation, my stronghold.” (Ps. 18-1-3).

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”  (Matthew 11:28-30).

We clearly need a strong roof over our heads, a shelter, a refuge of safety. And there is no better than the Name of God. In fact, in Proverbs it says that “the Name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run into it and are safe.” (Prov. 18:10). In Scripture, one’s name is synonymous with one’s character. So when we run into the character of God, His good Name, His sterling reputation, and we will find shelter. In fact, there are three names of God in which we can find safety and protection. The first is Yahweh-Jireh, Lord Provider. Trust Him to protect and provide for us, for that is His character, His Name, and He is a provider for all our spiritual needs. And run into Yahweh-Rophe, Lord Healer. He will heal any spiritual or emotional scars or wounds we experience. He is a healer, so when we run to Him, we will be safe and whole. And finally Yahweh-Rohi, Lord Shepherd. His love will care for us, seek us out if we ever are lost, lead us and guide us, strengthen and encourage us as we live our life in His flock. He is our shepherd, we can trust in Him. So Yahweh-Jireh, Lord ProviderYahweh-Rophe, Lord Healer; and Yahweh-Rohi, Lord Shepherd. May we learn daily to open wide the door and run into God’s Name, His character, and thus find our strong shelter against all the elements.
