Gospel Song – Brother Moses Smote the Water

Gospel Song – Brother Moses Smote the Water.

There is little known about the origins of this traditional gospel song. The earliest recording of “Brother Moses” was in 1941. But it became a gospel standard after the Golden Gate Quartet recorded it in 1945. It is telling that Moses is thought of as “brother” in the African American tradition, a man who is led by God to bring his people out of slavery. Here is a man who can speak the language of liberation, and so Moses was considered a dear family friend in the African American experience.

LYRICS – Brother Moses Smote the Water

Brother Moses smote the water, and the children all passed over.

Brother Moses smote the water, and the seas give away. (2x)

Sister, ain’t you glad, you passed that sinful army,

brother ain’t you glad that the seas give away.

If you get there before I do,

look for me, for I’m coming too.

God called Moses from the mountain top,

He passed His Law into Moses heart.

Brother Moses smote the water, and the children all passed over.

Brother Moses smote the water, and the seas give away.

  1. You’re doing a great job with gospel songs. I especially like the background of the songs, authorship and who has recorded them. I use Spotify a lot, so your stories help. I like that you’re giving credit to the wonderful Golden Gate Quartet, who deserve to be more widely known by Christians.
