Better Than Perfect
“Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and blessing!” (Revelations 5:12)
Is God worthy? Yes! Why? Because He is:
- Better than Perfect. He is utterly complete, doesn’t “need” anything, and never needs to change. God is a 3-Person community of love. He has each other, He needs no one else, ever. “His beauty is past change.” (Gerard Manley Hopkins). “I will proclaim the name of the Lord. Oh, praise the greatness of our God! He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong.” (Deut. 32:3-4). “From Zion, perfect in beauty, God shines forth.” (Ps. 50:2).
- Bigger than the Universe. His immensity stretches outside of natural space. “His center is everywhere, His circumference nowhere.” (H. Lockyer). “The heavens, even the highest heaven, cannot contain you.” (Solomon, 1 Kings 8:27). “Am I only a God nearby,” declares the Lord, “and not a God far away? Do not I fill heaven and earth?” declares the Lord. (Jeremiah 23:23)
- Older than Time. God invented time and chronology, so is outside of time itself. No birthdays for God. He was the same age 15 trillion years ago as He is now, and will be 15 trillion years from now. He never began, He’ll never end. “Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God… For a thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by.” (Ps. 90:2,4). “With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.” (2 Peter 3:8).
- Stronger than Energy. He created everything out of nothing. His power designed and sustains life, from the subatomic to the universal, from electrons and quarks to galaxies and constellations. All of creation’s kinetic energy is like the tiniest of sparks issuing forth from the consuming fire and life-force of God. “First this: God created the Heavens and the Earth – all you see, all you don’t see. Earth was a soup of nothingness, a bottomless emptiness, an inky blackness. God’s Spirit brooded like a bird above the watery abyss. And God spoke…” (Genesis :1-2).
- Lower than a Servant. God chose to limit Himself, a willing volunteer of love. Even though God is better than perfect, “He made himself nothing…” (Philippians 2). Even though He is bigger than the universe, God became small, insignificant, marginalized. Even though God is older than time, He submitted to chronology and became a fetus, a baby, a boy, an adolescent, a man. Even though He is stronger than energy, God chose weakness, frailty, and impotent death.
“Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:9-11).
He is worthy! Lift Him up, set Him apart, and make Him famous!
