His Eye Is On the Sparrow.
“Not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing about it. And the very hairs on your head are numbered. So don’t be afraid, you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.” (Matthew 10:29-30).
This classic gospel hymn was written and published in 1905 by Charles Gabriel and Civilla Martin. Although both composers were white, their song immediately struck a chord in the African American church. “His Eye…” was thus popularized early in the black community, and has been covered by numerous musicians both black and white since the 1950’s. A word about sparrows: These unassuming birds evidently are usually seen in the company of other sparrows, and rarely alone. So a single sparrow on a roof or branch came to symbolize sadness, isolation, depression, and insignificance. Also, sparrows are so common as to be overlooked. If the Lord can watch over the common sparrow, certainly He will watch over each of us when we are wounded or forlorn. The God of comfort has promised to pay us attention and heal and strengthen us when we are weak. His eye will watch over us.
“That is why I tell you not worry about everyday life – whether you have enough food and drink or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food and your body more than clothing? Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to Him than they are?” (Matthew 6:25-27).
